Robert Downey Jr Rips Into Modern “Influencers” And The Way Society Glorifies Them

The legendary Robert Downey Jr has gone off on one about modern-day “influencer” culture, dismissing the notion that online content creators are the future of stardom as “absolute horsesh-t.”

Downey Jr, 61, argues that true stardom requires talent and creation, not just self-promotion…

He says: “I hear people talk about stars of the future are going to be influencers… I don’t know what world you’re living in, but I think that’s absolute horsesh1t.

“Next thing you know it’s ‘Hey, if you like the way I’m playing this video game, do you want to send me a donation?’… it becomes like a religion. They’re almost the evangelical hucksters of the Information Age.”

Can’t argue with that really, but I’d argue we’re already living it. People’s attention spans aren’t long enough to watch movies or shows, so the characters they’re tuning into are TikTokers and influencer types who just stick the camera on themselves for a few seconds. When you’re used to scrolling through short little clips of iShowSpeed or whoever, 2 hours of Robert Downey Jr seems like an eternity! At least for the younger generations, anyway.

Of course, there’s no comparing influencers to actual skilled actors. It’s basically someone who’s good at being on camera Vs actors who have trained for years. Someone who’s trying to sell you stuff through your phone Vs someone performing art.

It was interesting though how the interviewer pointed out that while a lot of influencers don’t have anything to say, some may well do. Well, I suppose that’s true of any celebrity or movie star. Don’t hate the player, Robert! Hate the game.
