Seems the Royal Family could be recycling their plotlines after Prince Harry and Meghan Marke were reportedly involved in a “near catastrophic car chase” in New York last night after leaving a Ms. Foundation gala.

And by near catastrophic car chase, they mean they almost crashed into a bunch of other cars as paparazzi chased them around town for over two hours. A two-hour car chase in super congested NYC? Apparently so. A spokesperson told multiple outlets:

“Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi.

This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers.”

Meghan Markle’s mum, Doria Ragland, was also in the car. I don’t want to sound dubious or anything (too late?) as this is exactly the sort of behaviour we’ve come to expect from the paparazzi, but at the same time it also seems like the exact kind of story that Harry & Meghan would love to be involved in, as it further portrays them as the hounded innocents trying to escape the press 24/7 and of course draws more parallels to Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash in 1997 while her driver (who also died, alongside Dodi Fayed) was attempting to flee the paparazzi.

Harry had previously said of the press’s response to his late mum Diana:

“This family is ours to exploit, their trauma is our story and our narrative to control. I accept that there’ll be people around the world who fundamentally disagree with what I’ve done and how I’ve done it, but I knew that I had to do everything I could to protect my family, especially after what happened to my Mum (Princess Diana). I didn’t want history to repeat itself.”

At the Ms. Foundation event itself, Meghan received the Ms Foundation’s Women of Vision Award, recognising her ‘global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls’, so that’s nice. Just a shame the night had to end on such a bum note for her. More to follow, I’m sure…
