A man has been given a £346,000 payout after colleagues threw a birthday party against his wishes, sparking a panic attack and leading to him being fired.

Kevin Berling told his manager at Gravity Diagnostics in Covington, Kentucky, that he did not want his birthday celebrated because it would cause him immense stress.

Well the company ignored his plea and threw a surprise party anyway, putting up a banner and everything. Kevin suffered a panic attack, then the next day had another panic attack when his supervisor chastised him for “stealing his co-workers’” joy and “being a little girl”.

Kevin said the incident brought back bad memories regarding his parents divorce during childhood, so he left the building and had a panic attack in his car. The following day, a meeting was held with his supervisor and another colleague to discuss what had happened. Kevin had a panic attack in the middle of that and was fired.

As per the BBC, Kevin successfully sued for disability discrimination and banked $450,000 (£346,000). A judge ruled that Kevin should get $150,000 for the loss of income and $300,000 for the humiliation, loss of self-esteem and suffering caused. Not a bad birthday gift at all, albeit a late one. Definitely worth having to sit through a rendition of Happy Birthday from your colleagues, that’s for sure. Or maybe he could try not being a p*ssy next time?
