Jay Slater’s Mum Still ‘Keeps His Phone Charged’ Two Years On From Tragedy
Debbie Duncan, the mum of Jay Slater, has revealed that she still keeps her late son’s phone charged two years after his death.
19-year-old Jay Slater was one of the biggest summer stories of 2024 after he went missing in Tenerife, and was later found dead after falling into a ditch during a 14-hour trek home while high on drink and drugs.
By the time his body was found, and even after, all sorts of conspiracy theories were doing the rounds about what happened to Jay and what prompted him to end up in that ditch.
Some questions still remain unanswered, like that whole thing around the £12,000 Rolex Jay claimed to have stolen on the night he died.

Well anyway, his mum has now spoken to The Mirror about how she’s going to feel when England take on Croatia in the World Cup next Wednesday, as it’s on the same day as the second anniversary of Jay’s death.
She said: “I don’t know how I’m going to feel really. It will be strange. He told me, ‘I’m not going mad today, Mum’. England were playing. He said, ‘I am going to go and watch football, we are going for food.’ Obviously, things just got carried away in the moment he had a drink.
“I sit and question ‘what were you thinking?’ But you can’t change anything. Jay is not coming back.”
As well as redecorating her son’s room, Debbie says she has kept all of his things.
“I’ve got Jay’s phone too. I try to make sure it’s always charged. I sit with it and his memories will come up on his social media. I laugh at his daft little videos, then cry at what a good looking boy he was. I think, ‘What a waste’.”
“Jay would have turned 21 a few weeks back and that was really hard.”
She says she goes into his room, sprays his aftershave and lies on his bed.
“I slept in here with Buster at the weekend. You want his smell to last forever, but it’s not going to, is it?”

On trolls who targeted her online: “Whatever I did or said was ripped to pieces. Trolls said Jay must have had a really bad upbringing.
“We’ve met with the government, we’ve met with Ofcom. They’re making the right noises. But things need to change – and fast.”
“It’s incredibly hurtful to be on the receiving end of that.”
I suppose it’s quite normal to still be doing things like that two years after losing your son, especially given the unbelievably public and traumatic circumstances. Even by still giving interviews about Jay to the press, it probably helps her feel like she’s keeping his memory alive.
Unfortunately she’ll probably get a few more trolls coming at her thanks to this update, but then apparently she’s working with the government and Ofcom to crack down on that sort of thing. Good luck to her.
