Green Party Leader Zack Polanski Apologises After ‘Undermining Hero Officers’

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has apologised after sharing a social media post criticising police officers who apprehended Golders Green suspect Essa Suleiman.

A few people were upset with the way the officers repeatedly booted the stabber in the head after he was already tased and on the ground, and Polanski was one of them. Well, initially, at least.

The Green Party leader reposted criticisms accusing the officers of police brutality:

Polanski has now apologised for criticising the officers, after both Met Commissioner Mark Rowley and PM Keir Starmer condemned him for ‘undermining’ their heroics.

Polanski said this afternoon:  ‘Everyone in leadership has a responsibility for lowering the temperature at a time of such tension, and I apologise for sharing a tweet in haste. 

‘Police responses to emergency situations such as these do need later reflection in the right forums, but I accept that social media is not the appropriate channel for doing so.

‘I have invited Mark Rowley to meet with me to discuss the police response and the wider issues raised in his letter.’

Sir Mark had accused Polanski of undermining the confidence of his officers.

He said: ‘Unless you’ve been in that moment where you’re scared stiff and you’re confronting somebody so dangerous, it’s hard to put yourself in that situation.

‘I need my officers to have confidence to tackle the most difficult and dangerous individuals.

‘If an eminent person wants to thoughtlessly step into that and undermine their confidence to act that then I’m going to deal with that.’

Fair point, really. After all, Suleiman still had the knife in his hand and was refusing to drop it, even after they tasered him and kicked him in the head a few times. In America, he would have been shot, no questions asked. Seems like Polanski has seen the light on this one.
