Being Lizzo’s PR team must be the most impossible job in the world right now. First we had allegations from her ex-dancers that she fat-shamed them and forced them to eat bananas from sex workers’ vaginas in Amsterdam, and now an Oscar-nominated director has chimed in with her own first-hand experience of working with the pop sensation.

Filmmaker Sophia Nahli Allison says Lizzo hired her to film a documentary on her life, but she couldn’t even make it two weeks before quitting because of the “extremely hostile and toxic work environment” Lizzo created.

“Lizzo creates an extremely toxic and hostile working environment and undermines the work, labor and authority of other Black and brown womxn in the process. Notice how the documentary ended up being directed by a cis white man.

She is a narcissistic bully and has built her brand off lies. I was excited to support and protect a Black woman through the documentary process but quickly learned her image and ‘message’ was a curated facade.

I stand with the dancers and anyone who has had similar experiences working with her and her team. These working conditions are not ok.”

Aside from all the above, another dancer claims she was so terrified of Lizzo that she peed herself because she was so afraid of leaving rehearsals. Other former employees allege sexual, religious and racial harassment, plus disability discrimination, assault, false imprisonment, and more. It’s important to remember this is all “alleged” at this point, but when you’re being accused of pretty much every bullying behaviour under the sun from a dozen ex-employees, it’s probably a decent indication that something dodgy’s going on.

Initially, the director had responded with the following to the news that Lizzo’s ex-dancers were suing her:

The maddest part about the whole situation is that Lizzo’s entire brand is based off her being a humble, inspirational, thriving member of the #BeKind movement who put in work for years before finally breaking through in an industry that keeps bigger women down. So to now find that she’s (allegedly) one of the biggest bullies around is going to be unbelievably damaging to said brand. In fact, she’s reportedly already been dropped from consideration for the next Superbowl halftime show.

Lizzo has now hired the big guns to represent her as her ex-dancers taker her to court:

Can we televise this one too?
