Welp, apparently growing up the son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Chet Hanks was disrespected and mocked by his peers because he had a ‘privileged’ life and famous parents. People were also jealous of him because he was ‘good with girls’ and had enough money to take them out and drive them around in nice cars all the time. This led to him developing a ‘hard exterior’ which led him down the path of drink and drugs without a ‘strong male role model’ to help him deal with it. Bet Tom Hanks will be thrilled to hear that one.

That’s what I didn’t understand as a kid, that these people were f*****g jealous of me and they were projecting their own insecurities on me.

I needed to hear that as a kid. I didn’t have a strong male role model to tell me that: “Hey bro, f*** these people, they’re just jealous of you. You have all these things that they want, so they’re trying to f*****g throw their shade at you so you can feel as s****y about yourself because they’re jealous.”

I needed to hear that. I didn’t have anyone to tell me that, so this is me now, as a man, telling the younger version of myself what he needed to hear.

Fair enough really. There’s a good chance hearing those words could have been life-changing, whether they came from his dad or any other male role model growing up. Still, Tom & Rita’s other son Colin turned out OK:

Ever seen the Fargo TV series? He’s awesome in it!

Anyway, good to see Chet Hanks doing better these days and having some success of his own both in music and TV. People will watch that interview and call him ungrateful and whatnot but at the end of the day, it’s all relative and we all have issues from childhood we carry into our adults lives, whether you’re mega privileged or not.
