UK Rapper Fredo Opens Up What Life Was Like In Dubai Jail

A couple years back, UK rapper Fredo was busted at Dubai International Airport while arriving for a holiday. He was travelling from Spain, and completely forgot that he had a 3.5g bag of weed on him, so like a genius, he decided to swallow the bag. Instead of flushing it down the toilet or dashing it under someone else’s seat as he left the plane?

Well anyway, turns out they’re super thorough at Dubai customs, and Fredo got busted anyway, as they handcuffed him to a hospital bed and just waited for him to sh1t out the bag. Madness:

This resulted in the 32-year-old rapper being locked up in Dubai jail – but it actually doesn’t sound like he had too bad a time? Well, aside from the hygiene issues. Fredo explains:

He said: “I felt like it happened for a reason. I remember being in there and thinking ‘if they could let me out now or let me out in 6 weeks, I swear I’d pick 6 weeks’. Even though I’m in a foreign jail with 8 guys in my cell, I just felt relaxed. I was reading. Once I got there I knew the maximum I would do is 3 months and I’d be out. Once I realised that, I was chilling.”

On differences between Dubai/London jails: “The hygiene. I didn’t get no fresh air the whole time. I didn’t go outside once. Jails in England is mandem so you can relate. In these jails it’s real foreigners. Fresh people from Africa and Asia. Their people skills are different to yours. You might be in the shower and a man will cough up a phlegm and spit it out right in front of you. They’re different. But it’s not violent at all.”

Well, that doesn’t sound too bad, does it? Especially only having to do 3 months, which is way less than what I imagined Dubai gives for weed possession.

Looking into it – Dubai reformed its drug laws significantly in 2022. The minimum sentence for first-time drug possession was reduced from two years down to three months. The idea is to treat recreational drug use as an illness rather than a criminal act, allowing judges more discretion to issue shorter sentences or fines. So that’s good to know.

Fredo reportedly quit smoking weed after his jail stint, so fair play to him on that. Unfortunately, he managed to get himself in trouble again once back in the UK; using Snapchat to (allegedly) conspire with seven others to purchase firearms to shoot their rivals, including fellow rapper Digga D.

Those seven others were found guilty in court, but Fredo never turned up and is now apparently a fugitive on the run and back in Dubai putting out music and doing interviews by the pool. He remains an active suspect with an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Why hasn’t the UAE extradited him back to the UK? Well, it’s complicated. While a treaty exists, it’s typically reserved for high-level financial crimes or terrorism. For gang-related firearms conspiracies, the legal process to bring a citizen back can take years. So it looks like Fredo will be enjoying life outside of UK jurisdiction for some time before it all gets figured out.

Will he manage to behave himself in Dubai in the meantime? We’ll see.
