Coffee Shop Apologises To Grieving Family For ‘Sick Joke’ After Staff Member Called Them ‘Depressed’ On Receipt

A coffee shop has apologised to a grieving family after an employee described them as ‘depressed f***s’ on a receipt following their father’s funeral.

Crossroads Café in Poundbury, Dorset, issued a formal apology after a 17-year-old staff member issued the below receipt to the family.

Hannah Pharoah and her family were hosting a wake at the coffees shop for her dad, Steve Pharoah, an urban planner who died at age 67. Approximately 30 mourners were in attendance.

The family said staff were “rude and dismissive” during the event, but only noticed the brutal message on their receipt the following day.

When Hannah (below) called the cafe to complain, co-owner Matthew McCaurtie dismissed the message as a “joke” and apologised, and also refunded the family in full (£200).

However, the family then wrote about their ‘appalling’ experience online, prompting a person connected to the business to message Hannah on social media calling her a “s***y human being”.

Well obviously that just made things worse for the Crossroads Café because Hannah blew that up on social media too, and now all the blogs and websites are covering the story.

Co-owners Sahil Dalvi and Matthew McCourtie have now released a statement accepting full responsibility, describing the whole saga as “completely inappropriate” and “deeply upsetting”.

The staff member responsible was immediately suspended pending further investigation, and the café requested a formal written apology from them.

Fair enough really. Maybe it was a little harsh of Hannah to write a negative review even after they’d apologised and issued a full refund, but it was beyond stupid for someone to then send her an abusive message on social media.

Still, reviews overall looking very good. Maybe wouldn’t hold my father’s wake there though…
