Lily Allen Turned Down 200,000 Bitcoin For A Gig In 2009 – That Amount Is Now Worth $18.6 Billion
Lily Allen would have been among the top 25 richest women in the world right now – and the richest musician on the planet – had she only accepted 200,000 Bitcoins to play a gig way back in 2009.
Bitcoin started in January that year (2009), but only really blew up in 2013, and then 2017 and again in the 2020s.
I guess Lily Allen, then 23, thought Bitcoin was a joke, and so turned down the offer of 200,000 Bitcoin to perform a live-streamed concert for the online game Second Life that year.
She confessed to her almighty c0ck-up on X back in 2014:

If she had taken the gig and held onto the Bitcoin, it would now be worth $18.6 billion, which would have made her the 23rd richest woman in the world today!
In fairness, 200k Bitcoin in 2009 was only worth $200, so is it really any wonder she didn’t do it? No way of predicting it would be worth so much 20 years later.
Either way, it’s an absolutely brutal “what if?”, although I guess she hasn’t done too badly for herself without it. Still – an extra $18.6 billion in the bank?! She’d be richer than Madonna and Beyonce and Lady Gaga combined! She also wouldn’t need to be on OnlyFans anymore, that’s for sure.

Then again, would she really have held onto 200 Bitcoin for two decades? Probably would have spunked it all, especially with the way she was moving back then.
Worst still – she probably would have lost her password and been one of those people locked out of their accounts for eternity with no way of getting back in.
Come to think of it – we all had the opportunity to buy 200 Bitcoin back in 2009 and would all be billionaires by now.. But it’s probably a little more painful when it’s offered to you on a plate for an online concert. Unlucky, Lily.
