Prisoner On The Run After Being Mistakenly Freed From HMP Wandsworth
The BBC is reporting that there is now a manhunt underway for another foreign criminal mistakenly released from prison – the second time it’s happened in the space of a week.
The error at HMP Wandsworth in south London happened on 29 October – just five days after the high-profile release of migrant sex offender Hadush Kebatu from HMP Chelmsford.
However, it was only yesterday afternoon (Tuesday November 4) that prison bosses realised their mistake.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 13:00hrs on Tuesday, 4 November, the Met was informed by the Prison Service that a prisoner had been released in error from HMP Wandsworth on Wednesday, 29 October.
“The prisoner is a 24-year-old Algerian man.
“Officers are carrying out urgent enquiries in an effort to locate him and return him to custody.”
This comes after Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy said there would be extra checks rolled out at UK prisons after the accidental release of Kebatu – whoops.
Unbelievable. You really could not make it up. It’s not clear why it took 5 days to notice the issue and report it to police, but obviously this guy could be anywhere by now. They also haven’t released his name or picture, just that he’s a 24 year old Algerian man, so the public can’t assist the police if they do happen to encounter him.
Interesting fact is that since 2021 there have been on average 17 mistaken releases per month. 17! Clearly the prison system is failing very badly. It might actually be funny if it wasn’t putting so many people at risk.
Here’s hoping they manage to catch this latest mistakenly released prisoner soon…
