TalkTV presenter and radio host James Whale has passed away aged 74 following a battle with kidney cancer.

Whale wasn’t the most likeable personality around, and the reaction to his death online certainly reflects that, but he was still a legend of the game who worked as a broadcaster in the UK for over 50 years. That’s pretty remarkable, no matter what you think of him.

Here are a few tributes from the people who did like him:

Tributes began to pour in for the star, with many of James's colleagues sharing their memories with the star and sending their love to his family

Lizzie Cundy also paid tribute with a gallery of snaps of the pair together

And a few… less kind words from those who did not:

Love him or hate him, James Whale reached the peak of his profession and was highly respected within it, despite holding some controversial views and coming off as a heartless pr1ck at times. For example, in 2018, he was suspended from talkRADIO for “lacking sensitivity” when talking to a rape victim, laughing when she said she was “orally raped” and ridiculing the way she handled the situation. So it’s completely understandable how you feel about the guy, either way.

In any case, RIP to a British broadcast legend and one of the certified ‘kings’ of talk radio, and thoughts with his friends and family.
