Earlier this week we finally saw full footage of the infamous Manchester Airport incident in which two brothers, Mohammed Fahir Amaaz and Muhammad Amaad, assaulted a group of police officers who were trying to arrest them after one of the brothers had (allegedly) headbutted a man at Starbucks in Terminal 2.

The footage included a moment where Amaaz brutally punched PC Lydia Ward full-on in the face, and now new bodycam footage shows PC Ward crying hysterically after the fracas ended:

PC Ward suffered a broken nose as a result of the punch, and told Liverpool Crown Court this week that she had ‘never experienced’ such violence in her police career.

She told the jury: “I tried to grab him off so he could stop kicking PC Marsden. All I remember then is that he turned and he punched me straight in the face. I can’t really remember where it landed but I know where my injuries were. I remember falling on the floor and everything went black.”

PC Ward, who was a former special constable with Lancashire Police who joined GMP in 2018, added: “Never in my whole time in the police service had that level of violence been used on me before.

“It felt really hard. As I came round, all I could feel was blood pouring out of my nose. I was just thinking he has done something to my nose, face area. I didn’t know what has happened.”

Obviously that footage is horrible to watch and you hate to see it, but there’s now a lot of debate over whether female police officers should be responding to frontline incidents that involve violent males in particular. I know the poor woman got punched in the face, but it just seems very unprofessional and discouraging to be crying about it afterwards, harsh as that sounds.

Of course, there’s more to being a police officer than being able to scrap. A big part of the job is actually talking to people and being personable as well as polite and professional, thinking on your feet, defusing situations. Obviously PC Ward is good at what she does and has a fair bit of experience as a policewoman. She was just horribly unlucky on this occasion to be attacked by an absolute scumbag while on the job.

Here’s hoping Mohammed Fahir Amaaz and Muhammad Amaad get the book thrown at them. There should really be no other outcome, right?
