A woman who called a bouncer the N-word 25 times when he refused her entry to a club has been spared jail after blaming the racist tirade on the death of her mum.
Shannon Quinn, 28, racially abused and spat in the face of Ethan Obom when he turned her away at the doors of Banff nightclub in Southport last October.
The two actually knew each other from school, and Quinn further threatened to smash the windows of Obom’s home.
Sure enough, later that night, the dad-of-one got a call from his fiancée saying their front bay window had been put through.
Obom (above) said:
‘I am fearful that she will return to my girlfriend’s property. If I am not around, I do not know what she will do.
‘That night I immediately left work as I did not feel it was safe to leave my partner and child in the property on their own.’
Quinn pleaded guilty to assault, making threats to damage property, and racially aggravated intentional harassment.
In the end, she was given a 12-month community order with requirements to complete 20 days of rehabilitation and wear a sobriety tag for 120 days.
Her lawyer Alison Sharples told the court:
‘She has never accepted that she was the person who caused the damage to the window.
‘But she accepts that she made threats to cause criminal damage.’
Quinn blamed her behaviour on the sudden deaths of her mum Kelly, 39 (?!), nan Toni Heap, 58, and an unnamed close friend three years earlier in 2021.
Explaining how this could cause someone to behave in a racist manner 3 years later, her lawyer explained:
‘The complainant is known to her as they went to school together. But it is clear more went on than meets the eye.
‘She is a young woman who has a lot going on dealing with multiple mental health diagnoses. You can see what happened in relation to her mum.
‘It was absolutely horrific for her to have to deal with that as a young woman.
‘On the day in question she actually said in one of the messages to the complainant, “I was not myself”.
‘She accepts that she was drinking to excess and behaved in a manner that was completely unacceptable and wrong. She held her hands up and said, “I know I have done something wrong”.
‘This offence was borne out of having too much alcohol of the night and the stress of everything else she has been dealing with the last few years.’
Hmm, I guess we’re just going to have to take her word for it on that one.
Quinn is a mum-of-one herself, so it’s probably a good thing she didn’t end up in jail over such a stupid incident. Still, I’ll bet there are people in British jails right now who will read about this story and feel very hard done by being jailed for less serious offences.
Either way, let’s hope Shannon Quinn stays off the alcohol from now on. Maybe get some therapy to deal with the deaths of her friend and family members too.
