Weird China Fact - Virgin Boy Egg Urine

MMmmmm… boiled eggs in urine, that sounds great doesn’t it? Obviously not. But it’s not just any old wazz that will do. It has to be a virgin boy’s urine to make it a delicacy. Now, if you’re anything like me you will immediately cry “BS! No one would soak an egg in urine and cook it”. That’s a fair reaction, that’s how I responded. But, Wikipedia confirms this oddity:

Virgin boy eggs or “tong zi dan” Chinese: 童子尿煮鸡蛋; pinyin: Tóngzǐ Niào ZhÇ” JÄ«dàn are a traditional delicacy of Dongyang, China made by cooking eggs in urine collected from young boys. Every year in early spring time, the urine of prepubertal school boys preferably under 10 years is collected and boiled with eggs and sold for 1.50 yuan, around twice the price of a regular boiled egg. In 2008, Dongyang recognized the eggs as “local intangible cultural heritage”.

OK, but Wikipedia can occasionally get things wrong. So here it is from Reuters, the most respected news siphon in the West:

Basins and buckets of boys’ urine are collected from primary school toilets. It is the key ingredient in “virgin boy eggs”, a local tradition of soaking and cooking eggs in the urine of young boys, preferably below the age of 10.

Pretty nuts, huh?
