4) Enemy Aircraft Listener
In the days before radar the best early warning system we had was our ears. These mental looking contraptions helped amplify the sound of incoming planes in an effort to get a slightly earlier warning than with our naked ears alone.
A fella would simply stand in one of these incredibly daft looking set ups and listen as hard as he could for incoming baddies.
You’d look like a bit of a noob but there’s worse stuff you could be doing in the army I guess. I wonder how many of these guys were nearly deafened by a jovial “mate” with an airhorn?
