It’s probably no surprise that the USA topped the bill with the number of nuclear tests it’s carried out: 1,054 in total. I guess their argument would be that they need nukes as a deterrent to other countries. Errr… well, that hasn’t worked has it? You got a “Plan B” Captain America?

All Nuclear Tests Ever - Totskoye - Snowball

America was the first country to drop a nuclear weapon, it was called “Trinity” and it happened on 16th July 1945. Below is a picture taken 16 milliseconds after the detonation. Back then, you can give people a bit of leeway; we didn’t know about the long term effects of radiation. But after the massive cock up that was “Castle Bravo” in March ’54 you would have thought they would have had a closer look at what they were doing. Castle Bravo was ‘accidentally’ the biggest A-bomb America ever tested, at 15 megatons. Thanks to a last minute change in weather, inhabitants of the near by Marshall Islands had birth defects for years after.

Marshall Island babies were born with transparent skin and no bones. Between 1954 and 1958 one in three births on the Marshall Islands was stillborn. According to one source, hepatitis B and liver cancer is approximately 30 times higher in the Marshall Islands than in the US. Cervical Cancer in women of the Marshall Islands is 60 times greater and rates of breast, lung, oral and gastrointestinal cancer are three to ten times greater than in the US.

The US gave them a meager pay out, evacuated some islanders and cracked right back on with their “essential” bomb tom foolery. Nowadays they just deny it’s happening. I’m not even joking, how do they sleep?

The Soviets come in at slot number two in the race to be most destructive. They’ve pumped out 715 nuclear explosions in total. Mostly in Kazakhstan, I mean they wouldn’t want to blow up their own country would they? Even though they have the most space in the world.

Their most ridiculous experiment was called “Operation Snowball”. They detonated a bomb with as much force as Nagasaki and Hiroshima combined, that’s pretty nuts already but get this: they got 45,000 soldiers to run through the epicentre of the blast, just hours after the explosion.

Operation Snowball included 320 planes, 600 tanks and 600 armoured vehicles. The troops were told it was a “simulation” nuke and the villagers in the local area weren’t told a damn thing. When soldiers showed up at the hospital feeling as sick as a dog, they found that all of their medical records had simply disappeared.
