Woman ‘Who Stalked The McCanns Is Now 50/50 On Whether Or Not She Is Madeleine’

It looks like Polish woman Julia Wandelt is slowly but surely coming around to the idea that she may not be Madeleine McCann after all, after admitting in court that she’s now ’50/50′ on whether she truly is the missing British girl.

Wandelt, 24, is currently on trial at Leicester Crown Court accused of stalking Gerry & Kate McCann by sending emails, making phone calls and even turning up at their address, while claiming she is their missing child. She even sent ‘childhood memories’ she’d had to Maddie’s sister Amelie.

Today, Wandelt told a jury she would ‘walk away’ if she saw paperwork showing she wasn’t Maddie – even though a DNA test already conclusively proved that.

(FILES) Kate (L) and Gerry (R) McCann, whose daughter Madeleine disappeared from a holiday flat in Portugal in 2007, are seen during an interview with the BBC's Fiona Bruce at Prestwold Hall in Loughborough on April 28, 2017. The mother of missing British girl Madeleine McCann on October 8, 2025 told a court of her distress at being stalked by a Polish woman claiming to be her lost daughter when she knew she was an imposter. Kate McCann, giving evidence at the trial of Julia Wandelt for stalking her and her husband Gerry, also said the 24-year-old had attended a vigil last year for Madeleine. Prosecutor Michael Duck KC asked Wandelt if she still ‘entertained’ the belief that she’s the missing girl.

Wandelt said: ‘It’s neither yes nor no. Because it is very easy to provide me with the documentation, if I am not here, and it really is negative, I would like to see the documentation.

‘Now, I would say I’m 50/50. What’s the issue with providing the whole paperwork?’

Asked what would satisfy her, Wandelt raised her voice and tearfully told the jury: ‘An investigation into my disappearance, into what happened to me, why am I here?’

Mr Duck asked Wandelt: ‘If you had seen a negative DNA test result, would you have walked away?’

She replied: ‘If I received the entire paperwork, yes, I would walk away.’

Wandelt also told the jury she believed Gerry McCann was involved in her/Madeleine’s disappearance.

Asked what she based this belief on, Wandelt explained: ‘Mostly based on memories, also based on the way he came across, not letting Kate tell anything. The memories are the main reason I think that was the case.’

Wandelt recalled a memory to the court of ‘repeatedly’ being told ‘this is the only way to help your parents’.

She added: ‘I didn’t want to say the thing that would incriminate him (Mr McCann). I don’t want to say anything bad about them.’

Wandelt was asked about a letter she addressed to Kate McCann, which read ‘Dear Mum (Kate)’ and was signed off ‘Madeleine’.

In the letter, she wrote: ‘I’m so sorry for causing you so much distress.’

Mr Duck suggested it was Wandelt apologising for distressing her with the myth that she was Madeleine.

Wandelt replied: ‘She said I was causing her distress, I didn’t apologise because I recognise it as distress.’

Not sure what she means by that, but OK.

Asked whether showing up at the McCanns’ home unannounced in December last year could be considered intimidating, Wandelt said: ‘No, I don’t think it’s intimidating.

‘If I were looking for my daughter missing for 18 years, I would be OK speaking with the person saying they were my missing child.’

Well, I suppose that’s a fair point. The only issue is that it’s basically impossible for Julia Wandelt to be Madeline McCann at this point, given that her eye pigment is in a different place than Maddie’s, she has different coloured irises, and is two years older than the missing girl. Not to mention the DNA testing and her own Polish parents confirming that they gave birth to her and raised her.

Still, I suppose 50/50 is an improvement as she was 100% convinced that she was Madeleine McCann even just a few weeks ago. Here’s hoping she snaps all the way out of it sooner rather than later.
