We all know there’s a mad rush to get out of Ukraine at the moment, but can you imagine travelling anywhere with $29M (£22M) cash on your person? As reported by The Times, the wife of a prominent Ukrainian politician is alleged to have done just that; carrying the sum through a refugee border crossing into the EU.

A criminal case has now been opened into the failure by Anastasia Kotvitska to declare the removal of the large sum from the war-ravaged country. Her husband, Igor Kotvisky – once Ukraine’s wealthiest MP – said his wife was leaving the country to give birth, but denied reports she was carrying $28 million and 1.3 million euros. He posted the following onto Facebook before deleting his account:

All my money is in Ukrainian banks, I did not take anything out.

Very convincing. The allegation is that Anastasia did not declare the cash exiting Ukraine at the Vilok checkpoint, and was busted by Hungarian customs officers. What’s amazing is that these customs officers didn’t accept her bribes, because I’m 99.9% sure she offered one. I mean surely any time you’re smuggling £22M in cash out of a warzone some of that cash is earmarked for bribes? A customs officer opens up your bags and you simply look at them and say “I believe this is yours” while nudging a fat wad of notes in their direction. Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to have worked on this occasion, and now who knows what will become of Anastasia Kotvitska and all that cash. Cheers for that Putin – hitting the richest and poorest of Ukrainians where it hurts.
