Everyone knows that Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ear clean off back during their fight back in 1997 and I don’t think anyone else has tried that in the history of the sport before or since – for obvious reasons.

That all sort of changed on Saturday night though during the fight between Edgar Berlanga and Roamer Alexis Angulo when Berlanga became frustrated with his opponent throwing elbows in the seventh round and attempted to bite his ear off. You can check out the footage below:

Thankfully Berlanga didn’t make anywhere near the same kind of connection that Tyson made almost 25 years ago and the ref didn’t see the infringement either so the contest was allowed to continue. However, after winning the 10 round main event by unanimous decision, Berlanga didn’t do himself any favours by saying the following in his post match press conference:

He kept throwing elbows and, you know, head-butted me and stuff.

So, I was telling him like, ‘Yo, chill!’ You know, like I didn’t wanna get cut or anything.

But I don’t know – I just got aggressive in there, Mike Tyson style.

You know? I got a little carried away.

Awkward. Fortunately, Berlanga did come to his senses and issued the following statement on Twitter apologising for his behaviour yesterday:

I suppose that does make sense because you’re bound to be buzzed on adrenaline during a boxing match. Not sure if that excuses the fact he tried to bite someone’s ear off though. Swings and roundabouts.

For more of the same, check out this guy who got caught biting a woman’s boob during a cricket match. Ouch.
