The Queen’s death has thrown up a lot of wonderful stories about her, but this one about how she turned down a Paul McCartney concert to watch ‘Twin Peaks’ is definitely one of my favourites.

The story was revealed a long time ago on a ‘Twin Peaks’ DVD by series composer Angelo Badalamenti, who explained the following:

Back when Twin Peaks was kicking off around the world, I flew by Concorde to London, to work with Paul McCartney at Abbey Road.

[McCartney] said, ‘I was asked by the Queen’s office to perform 35 minutes of my music to celebrate her birthday at Buckingham Palace. I’m very excited about it, and here comes the night, and I’m about to go on and the Queen kind of walks by me and says, ‘Oh Mr McCartney, it was just so lovely to see you tonight.’

And he says, ‘Well, your Highness, I am so delighted that you invited me to help celebrate your birthday and I’m now going to perform for you, 35 minutes of my best works.

She said, ‘Oh Mr McCartney, I’m sorry, but I can’t stay.

And Paul says, ‘But your Highness’, to which Her Majesty responded ‘McCartney, don’t you see, it’s five minutes of eight, I must go upstairs and watch Twin Peaks.

Five minutes of eight? Is that a special way that old/rich people talk about the time?

Regardless of that though, it’s pretty funny to see the Queen palm off Paul McCartney to watch a cult TV show like ‘Twin Peaks’. I suppose back then it was a bit more mainstream because there weren’t as many TV channels, but even so it’s really tickled me that Liz was up there watching Dale Cooper, Bob and everyone else with the rest of the world instead of watching an exclusive set with one of the most popular musicians of all time. What a badass.
