It’s always kind of scary going swimming in lakes because you never know what’s going to be lurking around in them, but it’s going to get even scarier now that there are apparently some testicle eating fish with human teeth out there.

The fish are known as the pacu fish and this isn’t the first time we’ve featured them on the site. Unfortunately though, every time we do speak about them it looks as though they’ve ended up migrating to another new site other than their native Papua New Guinea. This time is no exception either as they’ve been spotted in some lakes in Michigan.

Apparently the close relatives of the piranha have been let into the wild as they grow too big for home aquariums and so their owners set them free. This is not only dangerous for people who don’t want to get their balls bitten off, but also for the fish themselves says Nick Popoff, manager of the DNR’s Aquatic Species and Regulatory Affairs Unit:

pacu

Pets released from confined, artificial environments are poorly equipped to fend off predators and may be unable to successfully forage for food or find shelter.

Those that do succeed in the wild can spread exotic diseases to native animals. In the worst-case scenario, released animals can thrive and reproduce, upsetting natural ecosystems to the degree that these former pets become invasive species.

Yeah, so basically if you’re going to buy a pacu fish for some reason – not really sure why anyone would want one of these bastards as a pet – then make sure you know what you’re getting into and don’t throw it into the nearest lake when it gets too big for you. Not only is it going to be totally dangerous for anyone who values their balls, but it’s also going to completely fuck up the ecosystem too. Be sensible about these things.
