For the uninitiated, an NPC is a non-player character, i.e. any character in a video game that isn’t controlled by the player, so for instance all the random men and women walking around in GTA V.

In his next movie ‘Free Guy’, Ryan Reynolds plays an NPC who becomes self-aware within a massive open world game. As you can imagine – hijinks ensue. Here’s the trailer:

Well that looks like fun, eh? Here’s a synopsis as well:

In the open world video game Free City, an amalgamation of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite, Guy (Reynolds) is a non-player character (NPC) working as a bank teller. Thanks to a program developed by programmers Milly (Comer) and Keys (Keery) inserted into Free City by the publisher Antoine (Waititi), Guy becomes aware of his world being a video game, and takes steps to make himself the hero, creating a race against time to save the game before the developers can shut it down.

I think anyone who loves Ryan Reynolds (i.e. most people) will be very much into this. Not to mention gamers who love open-world games and who enjoy funny NPC interactions. We’ve already seen a similar plot done terrifyingly in ‘Westworld’ so it will be good to see a more comedic take on it.

It’s just too bad all the cinemas are probably going to be closed by the time this is released, but who knows, maybe they’ll just stick it on Netflix or Amazon Prime or something. Here’s hoping anyway.

P.S. Shout out all the NPCs out there finally being represented:
