The Red Lion in Bristol has been branded ‘Britain’s wokest pub’ for refusing to sell Thatchers cider, Coca Cola, Heineken, Polish lager Tyskie and Bacardi for ethical reasons.

The Red Lion say it would be ‘hypocritical’ to continue serving Thatchers because of the company’s historical links to slave trader Edward Colston.

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola, Heineken and Bacardi have all been accused of unethical practices in developing countries, and the owner of Polish lager Tyskie has apparently been linked to an anti-LGBT movement, meaning their products are not welcome in the Bristol bar.

Landlord Lemmy told Metro:

We have taken what we consider to be an ethical stance — it’s part of who we all are.

We have been labelled “woke” and all these weaponised words, which have made us feel pretty vulnerable.

Well that’s fair enough really. Especially in a place like Bristol which is probably one of the wokest cities in the UK.

Whether this turns out to be a wise business decision remains to be seen, but naturally people are freaking out about it on social media, accusing the pub of being run by “woke protesters who can’t let things go” and “everything that is wrong with society today.”

I looked up the most recent Red Lion Google reviews out of curiosity, and yup, just as expected…

Lol. Look, I don’t necessarily agree with boycotting companies that may have had questionable associations back in the day, but it is pretty pathetic to see grown men and women get this wound up over what an independent pub chooses to serve at their premises. Not that The Red Lion has to worry about their Google rating overall, though.
