We all know that racial abuse is still an issue at football events around the world and more so in some leagues than others, but I’d never heard of it going down at a pro gamer competition until now.

Over at the annual DreamHack gaming festival in Valencia this past weekend, a male spectator was reportedly heard calling a group of Brazilian fans ‘monkeys’ during the final of the ESL Impact tournament between Nigma Galaxy and FURIA, according to Dust2.

When confronted over the slur, the 30-year-old Portoguese man came up with the greatest defense ever; it wasn’t racist language he used, but rather homophobic language. Oh, that makes it alright then!

Other fans had reported the man celebrating a round win by Nigma Galaxy by shouting ‘monkeys’ at some Brazilian fans. He claims he actually said ‘maraco’, which is apparently a homophobic slur in Spanish. Well either way he was screwed as tournament organisers immediately spoke to the man and booted him out of the event.

ESL commented on the matter under Dust2’s post on Twitter:

We have removed one person from the crowd. Our festivals have zero tolerance against racist comments against players or other fans.

Obviously a very unfortunate incident but there is something quite amusing about this idiot defending himself from accusations of racism by claiming he was being homophobic instead. I guess he thought it would be the lesser of two evils? And straight after Pride month too. The best part about it is that now everyone thinks he’s homophobic and racist. Played yourself there, buddy.
