The Land Of Nod

Phrase Origins Bible - land of nod

Nowadays we think of the Land of Nod as a nice restful place you enter when you go to sleep. The original, biblical version was quite the opposite. It was a land out to the east of Eden where Cain was sent after he killed his brother. What a naughty boy. It appears in Genesis 4:16:

“And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden”.

“Nodding off” has been a phrase since at least the 1300’s and was used by Chaucer. Nodding off obviously refers to that blissful state of semi-sleep where your head nods embarrassingly whilst you’re sat on the early morning train. So it’s no surprise that confusion has arisen.
