I’m sure you’re all clicking on that headline and thinking that this can’t actually be what is happening, but this is in fact the most literal interpretation of what is going on here, even if there is a bit more to it than meets the eye in the headline. That’s why you click on the article though hey?

Melissa McCarthy recently started a new initiative called ’20 Days Of Kindness’ where she attempted to put the spotlight on twenty different charities that she thought deserved to supported. On the face of it ‘Exodus Cry’ is an organisation that is dedicated to ending sex trafficking all over the world and would seem to be a pretty good candidate for such an initiative; unfortunately though the company is headed up by an Evangelical preacher named Benjamin Nadot who has a history of sharing his anti abortion and anti LGBTQ+ views.

As such, Melissa McCarthy was called out on her support of ‘Exodus Cry’ by bunch of people on the internet and was forced to issue the following grovelling apology about how she and her team didn’t do the required research on each organisation:

Hi there. It has come to our attention that our ’20 Days of Kindness,’ which is a kindness hub that we started to shine a light on 20 great charities, had one in there that, there’s no other way to say it, we blew it. We made a mistake and we backed a charity that upon proper vetting stands for everything that we do not.

I want to thank everyone on social media who said, ‘What are you doing? Are you sure you want to back this?’ because the answer is, no, we do not. We have pulled it. We are so incredibly grateful for you ringing the bell and helping us be better. We’re sorry for our mistake. Oh boy, are we are sorry for it. Can’t believe that we missed it.

Hmmmm. Not really sure how to process this one.

It’s obviously not cool that Nadot is against abortion and the LGBTQ+ community, but he’s ultimately trying to do some good in the world by attempting to end sex trafficking and that’s what Melissa McCarthy was trying to do, so I’m not really sure that calling her out on social media for it and forcing her to apologise for slipping up on this is the most useful reaction here? Surely it’s better to let this Nadot guy focus on his anti sex trafficking pursuits rather than spreading his problematic views and hopefully that would be his main priority considering he set up a charity to try and do so?

On the other hand though, people with ideas like Nadot shouldn’t be allowed to spread him and ‘Exodus Cry’ is giving him the platform to do this, even if it is unintentional, so maybe fans were right to inform McCarthy of these facts and she was right to let everyone else know about it and pull her support. It’s a tricky one – I kinda wish organisations like this could just stick to stopping sex trafficking and not being actual bigots as well. Would it be so hard?

I also have to respect the way that McCarthy just straight up apologised and didn’t even try to justify her support because she just knew that whatever she said regarding it someone would just jump down her throat about it and so she had to just own it. That’s how cancel culture gets you in 2020 these days I guess and it seems like Melissa McCarthy has been reading the memos. A true student of the game.

For more of the same, check out Melissa McCarthy excelling in an episode of ‘Celebrities Reading Mean Tweets’. Guess she excels at this stuff.
