I can’t really think of anything I want to listen to less than Meghan Markle’s new podcast of Spotify, but those who did listen to it are not impressed, with the premiere episode of ‘Archetypes’ receiving pretty savage reviews all round.

The episode featured an hour-long interview with Meghan’s ‘dear, dear friend’ Serena Williams, and of course Harry pops into the room at some point too.

The Spectator titled their review ‘Meghan’s Archetypes podcast is really all about her’. The review reads:

“The first guest is Serena Williams, but tennis enthusiasts who tune in might be a bit disappointed. The show is in fact all about Meghan, since it takes 11 minutes for Serena to barely get a word in edgeways.

It’s hard to believe that it took 28 people, including eight executive producers, to make the episode – plus Meghan herself, who is also listed as an ‘executive producer’ in the credits.”

The Times‘ James Marriott wasn’t any more complimentary, describing the podcast as a ‘parade of banalities, absurdities and self-aggrandising Californian platitudes’:

“The effect of all the tinkly music and vapid conversation is to make you feel you’ve been locked in the relaxation room of a wellness spa with an unusually self-involved yoga instructor.”

Naturally, the Daily Mail’s Bel Mooney didn’t have very nice things to say either:

“This bizarre, saccharine and faintly queasy schmooze-fest between Meghan and ‘my dear friend Serena’ (as we hear over and over again) tells us next to nothing at all about the making of Serena Williams’s towering ambition.”

The foreign media weren’t impressed either, with Forbes calling it a ‘love fest’ with ‘not a lot of information or insight’ delivered. Australia’s Sky News host Andrew Bolt said that the podcast proves Meghan has a ‘monstrous sense of self-entitlement’ and ‘really does show the real her’.

Reviews by listeners on social media weren’t much better. One issue a lot of people had was Harry walking into the podcast room and telling Serena her hair is a “vibe”. Cringe central…

And the rest…

In any case it looks like Meghan is having the last laugh for now – with the first episode of Archetypes rocketing to the top of the Spotify podcast charts. You have to think the publicity off all these negative reviews only helps that, to be honest. Are those numbers sustainable though if it’s really as bad as people say it is? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
