The Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial was one of the major events of the year – sorry Russia’s war with Ukraine, Boris Johnson’s gradual fall from grace and the upcoming World Cup – and it’s no surprise that people are still talking about it.

One of these is Depp’s lawyer Camille Vasquez who was propelled into the limelight during the six week trial in the summer, with some people even thinking that her and Depp had been hooking up during it due to their close friendship. Vasquez was sitting down with Natalie Morales on CBS’s ‘The Talk’ when she decided to reveal that she didn’t think the trial was actually part of the #MeToo movement, despite the obvious parallels.

The statement came when Moraes asked if she had ever hesitated in taking on the case as a woman in the era of #MeToo. This is her reply:

@thetalkcbs “I believed Johnny… and I wanted the opportunity to give him his life back.” #CamilleVasquez on representing #JohnnyDepp ♬ original sound – The Talk

No because I know Johnny as a person, I’ve worked with him for four years. I believed him.

You know, to me, this case was not a Me Too case.

This was about what happened between these two people, and in a lot of ways, if you want to look at it as a Me Too case, it was an opportunity for Amber to tell her story, have an investigation happen in a court of law, and a jury came back and said ‘no we don’t believe you’.

But I never hesitated because I believed Johnny, and I was an advocate for him, and I wanted the opportunity to give him his life back. He deserved that.

Well, that certainly opens up a can of worms doesn’t it? I would be inclined to think that Vasquz’s main motivation here wasn’t justice, but probably the amount of money and notoriety she would  earn off it whether she won or lost, but her saying this also calls into question whether we should even believe women – or men for that matter – who reveal to the world that they’ve been subject to abusive relationships following its result.

I don’t think I’ve really got enough time to get into that one, but I think whether you believe Amber Heard or not you can probably agree the the trial has probably signalled the end of the #MeToo movement in respect to how it was from 2016-2022. Unsure if that’s good or bad to be honest, but I’m probably leaning towards the latter.

For more of the same, check out how much money Camile Vasquez made off the Johnny Depp trial. Told you.
