Absolute horror story out of Bolton this morning as a man claims to have bitten into a ‘live cockroach’ in his Tesco’s meal deal sandwich.
Adil Vasaya, 41, purchased the chicken tikka sandwich along with a drink and a bag of crisps at the Preston superstore, but as he bit into the sandwich, felt something moving around his mouth.
At first he thought it was a cinnamon stick, but then realised it was a cockroach.
Adil says: ‘As I put it down I saw legs come out and it started moving, it just freaked me out. For the first four days after, I couldn’t even eat – I couldn’t even face putting anything in my mouth.’
‘It literally traumatised me that much, for the first four days I just didn’t feel like eating at all.’
I’m not sure Tesco believe Adil’s story, though, because he’s only been given a £1.76 refund for his troubles – the cost of the sandwich minus the meal deal discount.
Tesco says it’s investigating the source of the cockroach, while insisting that no issues had been reported with its supply chain.
A spokesperson Tesco said: ‘We’re sorry to hear about this.
‘We work closely with our suppliers to ensure there are robust quality procedures in place, and sandwiches are thoroughly checked throughout the production process.
‘In a situation like this, we always ask that the customer returns the product to store for a full refund and so our team can fully investigate the potential cause.’
Looks more like a beetle, no?
In fairness to Tesco, if you consider that the meal deal contains a processed sandwich in white bread, crisps and a fizzy drink, the cockroach/beetle is probably the healthiest part of it. Still, I’ve got a feeling this guy is making it all up and is after a payout, which I’m almost certain he won’t get.
That’s not to say it’s impossible for this sort of thing to happen, though. All food factories must attract bugs and insects, so it’s only inevitable, even if extremely rare, that one could end up in your Tesco meal deal.
Definitely double-checking mine next time, that’s for sure.
