The two part ‘It’ remake from a few years ago was one of the biggest horror movie franchises in a long time, so it makes sense that the people behind it – and especially the film companies – would want to ride on its coat tails for a bit.

That’s where ‘Welcome To Derry’ comes in. The prestige television series is backed by HBO and will  serve as prequel to the two recent Stephen King movies from director Andy Muschietti. Muschietti and his sister Barbara will be heavily involved with the prequel, which promises to begin in the 1960s in the run up to the first movie and to also reveal the origin of the terrifying Pennywise the clown.

Here’s what HBO head of originals Sarah Aubrey had to say about it all:

We have been working with Jason Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane, Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti very closely.

They’re so deep into this mythology and they have such a firm handle on the storytelling around these characters and also the demented scares that they’re putting into things.

Sometimes I’m, like, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ Just all the wild ways they think up to terrify us.

You’ll be hearing more concretely about that development very soon.

That sounds very promising doesn’t it? I doubt that the team are going to drop the ball on this one after the smash hit movies, even if the second one wasn’t quite so hot.

I would expect this to probably drop at the end of next year, but as it doesn’t seem like anyone is even tapped up to star in it or anything, we might be waiting until 2024. Bummer.

For more of the same, check out this photographer who transformed his little brother into a version of Pennywise. Very weird behaviour.
