Anyone who grew up in the 90s will have spent countless hours with their friends huddled around a really small TV playing ‘Goldeneye 64’ and cursing their luck when one of your bastard mates laid a proximity mine in the vents in ‘Facility’, so everyone will be stoked to learn that a remaster of the game is finally coming out some 25 years after the original.

The bad news is that it’s only going to be available on Xbox and Switch, so all yourPS4/5 guys are going to be missing out. I suppose that’s only apt considering the great Nintendo/Playstation console wars from back in the day though.

Worse news is that only the Switch version is going to have access to an online mode. Obviously multiplayer mode was the main aspect that made ‘Goldeneye 64’ such a hit back in the day, so it seems kind of dumb to deny their biggest audience this massive part of the game, but what do I know? Maybe Xbox owners in their late 30s/early 40s all want to pile into their mate’s man cave and huddle round the screen to play on this. Unsure.

There’s no footage from the game yet sadly but there is this reveal trailer and a couple of screenshots out there:

Lol what? Those graphics don’t look good in the slightest? Yeah they look better than the original obviously, but not as good as some ‘demo’ versions of remasters I’ve seen on the internet over the years. Sorry to get all your hopes up.

Anyway, like most of these remasters or reboots I’m probably not going to get involved. Games like ‘Goldeneye’ and ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’ and ‘WWE: No Mercy’ were from a time and a place that was absolutely awesome and it’s never going to be the same recreating them 25 years later, so there’s not really that much point in trying. Let them stay in my memories where they belong.

For more of the same, check out this guy who spent 1400 hours recreating ‘Goldeneye’ in the ‘FarCry 5’ engine and making it look absolutely amazing. Maybe I should get the gang back together to play that one.
