Football history was made in the FA Cup this week as a goalkeeper became the first player ever to be sent off for urinating in the middle of a game.

Sadly there’s no actual footage of the incident, which involved Blackfield & Langley keeper Connor Maseko peeing in a bush while retrieving the ball for a goal kick. Referee Benjamin Duffill saw what Maseko was doing and showed him a straight red card. What, would he rather he peed his pants in goal or something?

Conor McCarthy, joint-manager of Blackfield & Langley, defended his player:

“He was not in the public’s vision. It was not like he was brandishing his parts. He was in the hedges having a wee whilst trying to find the ball.

The referee’s words after the match were: ‘if he’d asked me, I would not have sent him off.’”

So the reason the ref showed him a red was because he didn’t ask permission to discreetly taking a wee in a hedge, rather than the fact he took the wee itself. Which seems a bit unfair, doesn’t it? The guy was in the bushes looking for the ball. He saw the perfect opportunity to relieve himself and he took it. Where else do you want him to pee? On the pitch?!

In any case, I love the fact his manager defended him after the game. That’s the kind of manager you want on your side. Besides, wouldn’t a yellow card have been more apt, all things considered?

The game ended in a draw, so Blackfield & Langley FC will take on Shepton Mallet AFC again on September 6th (tonight!) to determine who goes through. It’s too bad Maseko won’t be involved, given the red card and all, but at least he doesn’t need to worry about where he’ll pee.
