This is one of the craziest stories we’ve written about in a while. Basically, this guy named Arthur Lee Cofield Jr stole 11 MILLION DOLLARS using a phone he smuggled into a maximum-security prison while serving 14 years for armed robbery.

The Georgia gangster impersonated billionaire Sidney Kimmel, the movie mogul behind films like ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘Moneyball’, in order to open a checking account using his contraband phone. With access to Kimmel’s driving license, a utility bill and the help of a co-conspirator outside of prison, he was able to complete the verification process.

He didn’t just try to steal a few thousand and move on – the guy went for the whole bag! Soon after he purchased 6,106 American Gold Eagle one-ounce coins for $10,998,859.92 from Money Metals Exchange, LLC. With the same phone, he hired a private security team to transport the coins via a private plane to his co-conspirator in Atlanta.

He then purchased a 6-bedroom mansion – per the FBI memo:

In July 2020, Cofield contacted the landowner of a six-bedroom residence located near West Paces Ferry, in Atlanta, Georgia, and offered to buy the property for $4.4 million. The landowner eventually received approximately $720,000 in cash as down payment from Eldridge Bennett and a woman Cofield described as his wife, Eliayah Bennett. At the closing on September 1, 2020, Eldridge Bennet conveyed the remaining $3.7 million in cash to the landowner.

So clearly Arthur Lee Cofield Jr has been busted and will probably do additional time for this, but still – you kinda have to respect the cunningness. The guy is a criminal mastermind who pulled off the biggest heist ever conducted from inside a prison. The rest of us couldn’t do what he did – and we’re not even incarcerated!

So how did he get clocked? I guess Cofield thought a billionaire movie mogul wouldn’t notice $11m missing from his account, but it seems someone picked up on it.

The maddest part is that he pulled this off from a maximum security jail, to which he had been transferred after ordering a hit on a love rival from the original jail he was kept in. In other words, they’d transferred him to maximum security in order to prevent him sending messages to the outside world. And he still managed to get his hands on a phone and steal $11m by impersonating a billionaire. If this guy actually used his brain for good rather than evil, just imagine what he could accomplish?

Either way, doubt he’ll get to throw a ‘welcome home’ at his 6-bed mansion once he’s out (if he’s ever out at this point). Best he can hope for is a movie made about his prison exploits. Would be a good one I reckon.
