The unnamed girl met Gaddafi when she presented the colonel with a bouquet at her school. She mistook the pat on the head for a paternal gesture. She was picked up after school by some women dressed in military uniform and taken to Gaddafi’s lair.

She was stripped naked, shaved, caked with makeup and put into a G-string and low-cut top. She was pushed into the Colonel’s room where he lay naked. She tried to escape but was shoved back in by the guards. What followed was 7 years of rape and abuse. She only escaped when a door was accidentally left unlocked one day. This is the stuff of nightmares. Gaddafi would binge on booze, cocaine and sometimes Viagra during his raping sessions.

It wasn’t just school children that endured his sickness. Gaddafi also surrounded himself with well manicured female guards known as ‘the Haris al-Has’. They were forced to watch brutal executions and pander to his every sexual whim. They were ultimately disposable and lived in fear.

One of his Haris al-Has described the following incident “early one morning, at 2am, we were taken to a closed hall… We were to witness the murder of 17 students. We were not allowed to scream. We were made to cheer and shout. To act as though delighted by this display. Inside I was crying. They shot them all, one by one.”

His female guards were first raped by him, then passed onto one of his sons and then finally to a member of the Libyan elite. They were mere playthings.

More tales of terror will undoubtedly come out over time. Gaddafi was a depraved lunatic and a sexual deviant. He showed no restraint and because of his absolute power got away with it for more than four decades. In a way it’s a shame he was executed, rather than subjected to life long misery such as the misery his victims endure. But life is rarely fair when you’re all-powerful.
