Extinction Rebellion Protesters Have Glued Themselves To Speaker’s Chair In House Of Commons

One of the main criticisms aimed at the Extinction Rebellion movement is that they often disrupt the lives of regular people just trying to get to work or do their jobs and that just annoys everyone and doesn’t draw attention to their cause, so I guess that explains why they’ve targeted the House Of Commons for their next stunt. Everybody knows that nothing really gets done in there at the moment heh heh heh.

Three protesters superglued themselves to the Speaker’s Chair  earlier today, whilst two others flanked them with signs saying ‘Let The People Decide’ and ‘Citizen’s Assembly Now’. One of them then made a speech saying the following:

We are in crisis. And what goes on in this chamber every day makes a joke out of us all.

We can not afford to carry on like this.

It is possible to act on climate and costs in a way that is fair and supports everyone

But our political system is too out of date and out of touch to see beyond the next election cycle and do what needs to be done.

We need a new way of making decisions, where more voices are heard, not just those at the top.

We need the true diversity of the country to be represented.

We need a Citizens’ Assembly, now. Citizens’ Assemblies empower ordinary people to make decisions that benefit everyone.

Decisions that can get us out of this mess and make life better, safer, fairer for all of us.

Well I suppose that’s a nice publicity stunt that will get people talking, but the likelihood of it achieving anything is exactly zero. Whilst I think someone other than the current government probably should be in charge of the country, I’m not really sure if a Citizen Assembly is really the answer either. Haven’t these people read ‘Animal Farm’?

Anyway, at least they’re not screwing up our commute anymore though right? Hmmm.
