It feels like we’ve done about a dozen of these ‘botched surgeries abroad’ posts in 2024 alone, but this case involving Wrexham beautician and aspiring model Donna Butterfield has to be the biggest sh*t-show we’ve covered yet.

Donna, 30, paid £3,000 in cash to undergo a cosmetic operation at a private clinic in Palma, Majorca, on September 1. She had actually undergone a breast enlargement operation by the same surgeon in Majorca several years ago, but wanted to have a slight imbalance corrected.

Bizarrely, the pre-op consultations were largely conducted by WhatsApp messages and when ‘a series of complications’ occurred that resulted in Donna going into cardiac arrest on the operating table, the surgeon had no next-of-kin details for her, and instead contacted a friend of hers that he found on Instagram.

When paramedics were called to the clinic, they were horrified by what they found and said that CPR had not been properly administered, so they reported the incident to police.

Donna, who had a pre-existing heart condition, suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the intensive care unit at Son Espases University Hospital in Palma but died on September 14. Doctors put Donna into an induced coma after she suffered catastrophic brain damage, but she never recovered.

Now, get this – three people are thought to be responsible for Donna’s death; the clinic manager, the surgeon and the anesthetist.

The manager, 69, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter as well as carrying out the surgery despite being disqualified. He is already serving a sentence for medical negligence and fraud, so police had to request his release from jail in Palma to detain him again!

Similarly, the anesthetist, who has been charged with homicide due to professional negligence, also had to be dragged out of jail because he’s currently serving prison time for the manslaughter of another patient.

As if that wasn’t insane enough, the main surgeon who performed the op passed away two months after the surgery from a terminal illness. So I guess he’s off the hook.

So with these three dangerous frauds working together, it was only a matter of time before another tragedy occurred.

There are loads more irregularities around the case; the fact that Donna couldn’t speak or read Spanish but still signed a consent form that was written completely in Spanish, and the fact the doctors made no pre-operative assessments despite learning she had a congenital heart defect.

It’s just a shame that even with so many horror stories coming out every other week, there are young women out there who will take the risk anyway in order to save some money and avoid waiting times in the UK. RIP Donna and thoughts with her friends and family in this difficult time.
