$4 Million In Bitcoin Vanished From Dead ASOS Founder’s Wallet In Thailand

You may remember the co-founder of British online retail giant ASOS fell to his death from a balcony in Pattaya, Thailand, back in February, which naturally raised some suspicions.

This is partly because, at the time of his death, multi-millionaire Quentin Griffiths was embroiled in an ongoing legal dispute with his Thai ex-wife, Ploy Kringsinthanakun.

The exes were caught up in court proceedings in which she had accused him of forging documents to sell land and shares without her consent, while he alleged she had misappropriated approximately £500,000 from a company they operated together.

There was also the matter of a lengthy custody battle between them over their two children.

It seems that nothing came of that as investigators checked CCTV and were satisfied that Griffiths was the only person inside the 18th floor apartment when he died.

However, things have now taken another turn as it’s been revealed that $4 million in bitcoin was moved out of his digital wallet in the days following his death.

The amount was taken out of his account in three transactions to an unknown destination.

Griffith’s 29-year-old son Joel filed a complaint six weeks after his dad’s apparent suicide, after the discrepancy was found when family members were handling the late tycoon’s estate.

However, at a hearing in Chonburi this week, Ploy’s lawyer Mona Mankong suggested that it was Joel himself who might be responsible for the missing bitcoin.

She said: “Quentin was very experienced financially and knew how to protect his assets. Only someone very close to him would know his passwords and security keys.”

Then the kicker: “How does the complainant know the exact amount that was taken? Does he himself have access to the crypto wallet?”

Fair question, I suppose. Joel has been questioned as part of the investigation but no formal charges or accusations have been made against him. I suppose whoever took Quentin’s computer or phone after he died could have easily got into his Coinbase account if he was logged in.

Would it be that big a deal if Joel pocketed his dad’s $4 million in bitcoin for himself? I’m sure his dad would be have been OK with it. Just too bad he didn’t bother to put a will together before he jumped, as far as anyone knows.

Thai police continue to examine the digital trail of the unauthorized transactions to determine who had the credentials to move the funds.
