MPs Will Hold 3-Hour Debate At 4:30pm On Monday On Petition Calling For Immediate General Election
There’s no denying it – Keir Starmer’s run as Prime Minister has (thus far) been a bit of a disaster, and it seems increasingly likely that he won’t make it to the next General Election in 2029.
In fact this Monday, January 12, 2026, MPs will hold a three-hour debate at 4:30 PM in Westminster Hall in which they will address the public petition calling for an immediate general election.
The petition, titled “Call an immediate general election,” received 1,059,231 signatures before closing on December 5, 2025.
A petition is usually considered for debate in Parliament at 100,000 signatures, so the fact this one has over 10x that means they really couldn’t ignore it.
Now, the debate is non-binding and will not include a vote, so don’t expect anything major on Monday. It does however serve as a formal platform for MPs to discuss concerns raised by the petition, and what the realistic next steps are.
The petition argues that the current government has introduced measures not included in its manifesto and that the majority of the public wants change. Isn’t that always the case? Well, perhaps a little more so with Sir Keir.

Ultimately, the decision to call an early election remains with the Prime Minister, so he could either throw in the towel now or endure another 3.5 years of being mercilessly ripped to shreds by the media and voters and let it happen naturally.
Surely he can’t be enjoying his run as PM at this point? Between consistently being made to look like Trump’s b1tch, the Digital ID fiasco and the recent dramas with activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah, he’s really been put through the wringer.
Come on Keir, we all know you want to enjoy a nice little summer break in 2026. Why put off the inevitable?
The only question is who takes over…?
