DJ Carey Jailed After Faking Cancer Using iPhone Cable Up His Nose

Irish hurling legend DJ Carey has been jailed after ‘exploiting the good nature of people’ with a fake cancer scam that banked him almost £350,000.

The 54-year-old ex-Kilkenny player went to ridiculous lengths to dupe friends and family into handing over almost 400,000 euros, including stuffing an iPhone charger up his nose to look like a medical cord and get people to send him money for treatment:

Lucky to have the right cable for an iPhone, to be fair.

Carey faked medical records and told his victims that he was due a one million euro payout from the HSE which he would use to pay them all back.

His friend Denis O’Brien loaned him more than 125,000 euros before asking for evidence of the medical treatment it would pay for. Carey forwarded him letters which he claimed were from the Fred Hutch medical centre in Seattle, but when O’Brien contacted them personally, they said they had never had any contact with Carey.

Carey also bizarrely told O’Brien he had won a handball tournament making him an elite athlete in the US and the government would help with his medical bills.

When police initially questioned him about his cancer claims, Carey said he first concocted the story in 2014 when in reality he was suffering from a heart condition. Huh?

Carey was one of the most acclaimed figures in Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) history, having won five All-Ireland titles and nine All-Star awards. God only knows what possessed him to pretend to have cancer and completely destroy his reputation like this.

I mean, it’s bad enough that anyone could do something like this, but especially when you have a high profile and so much to lose not just personally but legacy-wise. Completely unhinged behaviour! What was he thinking?

In the end, Carey was sentenced to five and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to 10 counts of inducing people to give him money after fraudulently claiming to have cancer. Unfortunately he’ll now be remembered as a disgraced sports personality, and nothing more.
