A transgender woman who failed to inform a man that she had male genitalia before performing a sex act on him has been found guilty of sexual assault.
Ciara Watkin, 21, of Stockton-on-Tees, was found guilty of multiple charges relating to sex acts she performed on the 21-year old man over a number of days in June 2022.
As the victim was not made aware of Watkin’s transgender status, he could not have given informed consent.
The whole time, the poor lad was none the wiser.
The pair reportedly met over Snapchat, texting each over a few weeks before meeting at a house in Thornaby.
After getting to know each other over a few drinks, they moved on to the bedroom, where Watkin told the victim she was on her period, meaning he couldn’t touch her below the waist as she performed sex acts on him.
A few days later, they met again at the victim’s house where more sexual activity took place. The victim’s mum and friends had met Watkin and suspected she was trans, but he wasn’t having any of it.
Watkin eventually blocked the man but then got back in touch with him, finally informing him via text that she was trans and had male genitalia.
The victim, who was described in court as a ‘naive young man’, told the police that he ‘didn’t swing that way’ and felt sick over the situation.
Watkin told police she knew if the man believed she was trans, the relationship would have ended.
Watkin’s lawyers argued that Watkin is ‘so obviously male’ that the victim had to have known she was trans, and that he simply pretended that he didn’t know. Which probably wasn’t very nice for Watkin to hear, but I guess she is trying to avoid going to prison here.
Sarah Nelson, Senior Crown Prosecutor at CPS North East, said: ‘It is clear from the evidence in this case that, prior to engaging in sexual activity with the victim, Watkin had made no attempt to inform him of her transgender status.
‘The Crown Prosecution Service has shown that, by failing to disclose this to him, it would not have been possible for him to give informed consent to sexual activity.
‘The victim has made clear in police interview that he would not have engaged in sexual activity had he known that Watkin was transgender and, consequently, these events have had a significant impact on his mental wellbeing.
‘We hope that he can take some comfort from seeing Watkin convicted for these serious sexual offences today.’
In the end, a jury at Teesside Crown Court convicted Watkin of two counts of sexual assault and one of assault by penetration (wait, what? I’m guessing that wasn’t with her penis otherwise there’s no way the victim could plead ignorance.)
Watkin was granted bail but the judge said ‘jail was the overwhelming likelihood’ – she will be sentenced on October 10.
