A furious Southampton man launched into a racist tirade after discovered his girlfriend had slept with a black man, which he claims violated the rules of their open relationship.
Christopher Dalby, 47, and his partner Amber Gilfoy had agreed on an open relationship – but only if she avoided black men, Southampton Crown Court was told.
When Dalby found out that she had broken this rule, he flew into a rage and confronted the man, named in court only as Mr. Marshall, in Southampton bar The Social.
At the scene, Dalby had already consumed four pints when he began racially abusing Mr. Marshall, before also verbally attacking Amber and her friend, Safia Uddin, who he also racially abused with anti-South Asian slurs. He even pushed Uddin before being restrained by patrons.
Dalby, who suffers from PTSD, anxiety and depression, claims he suffered an “autism meltdown” and said he felt “ashamed and embarrassed” for his behaviour. I guess autism has a side effect of racism? You learn something new every day.
Ms Uddin told in a statement to the court how his treatment of her that evening brought back the trauma of racism she experienced in her youth:
That night changed things for me.
‘Being called this took me right back to a place as a scared child. I immediately broke down in tears.’
In the end, Dalby pleaded guilty at Southampton Crown Court to racially aggravated intentional harassment and received 12‑month community order, requiring 25 days of rehabilitation activity, along with a £200 fine. The Crown is now considering whether the racial element of Dalby’s remarks warrants further hate crime charges.
Just goes to show how tricky it can be to make an open relationship work, especially when you’ve got rules in place regarding skin colour and whatnot. By stipulating that his girlfriend wasn’t allowed to sleep with black men, the black men instantly became forbidden fruit! Completely irresistible to her. To then have a very public, racist meltdown over it? An absolute disaster of epic proportions. Best stick to monogamy in future, I think.
