One week after being sentenced to 150 days in prison and having an embarrassing meltdown in court, Jussie Smollett has been released from jail on bond as he prepares to appeal his conviction on five felony counts of lying to police about a racist and homophobic attack, which he had paid his buddies to carry out.

According to the BBC, Smollett has been released on a personal recognisance bond of $150,000 (£114,000), meaning he did not have to put down money but agreed to come to court as required.

Smollett’s lawyer Nenye Uche told reporters that Smollett had gone on hunger strike for the 6 nights he spent in prison, surviving only on ice water. I guess they don’t serve up those 3am Subway sandwiches in jail? Uche said:

‘Ice water, that’s been his food and liquid. I can only imagine if I was in jail for something I didn’t do, I wouldn’t be eating.’

Lol – who is this guy kidding? Smollett had spent just two of his six days in jail in the general population, before being moved to a psychiatric unit over fears for his mental wellbeing. He had reacted to his sentencing by screaming ‘I’m not suicidal!’ over and over in court, like he thought he was going to be Epstein’d or something. Instead, they’ve let him out on bail while he and his defence team prepare his appeal. If he loses the appeal, which is the only sensible outcome given how blatantly full of crap the guy is, he’d presumably return to prison to finish his 150 day sentence while also having wasted a load of extra cash on lawyers. If he’d just bitten the bullet now, he’d be back home before the end of summer!

The judge on this case has already said something along the lines that he’s seen more legal work done on this case than some murders, because of the amount of delays that Smollett’s defence team have gone for. It’s honestly pathetic that he can’t just admit what everyone knows already; that he obviously faked the hate crime for attention. I guess he’s committed to rolling with the lie for the rest of his life though. Never forget:
