Maypole dancing is basically a pagan fertility ritual that somehow circumvented Christianity in which children dance around and tie ribbons to a giant symbolic phallus. To be fair, the ritual of Maypole dancing can be found all over Europe, not just here in Britain, so we’re not entirely to blame. In any case, I think we can all agree that there’s a pattern emerging here: our ancestors were obsessed with penises.
