Everyone has had some terrible first dates in their time, but I don’t think that anyone would be able to rival the events of this one that dramatically led to a prison sentence for one of the participants and the other one losing their job and suffering horrific injuries. Wild.
26 year old Carrie-Anne Knox was going on her first date in ten years after recently splitting up with her last boyfriend, who was also the father of her two young daughters. Bradley Van Outen had asked her out after doing some ground work outside her house in Bournemouth. He asked her out repeatedly until she agreed, and then took her to the pub in his BMW.
It was on the way out of the car park though that Bradley decided to show off and do some doughnuts, ending up crashing the car into a tree:
He doughnutted once and I grabbed the side of the door in a panic. As he went round a second time I could feel the back end losing control.
We hit the tree and I went flying into the windscreen. I had glass in my head and they found my hair and eyelashes embedded in the crack of the windscreen.
The doctors later told me if the seatbelt hadn’t been around my shoulder I could have died. When I looked down at my arm I could see something was wrong.
He said ‘I’m sorry but we need to get out of here’. I told him I couldn’t move and I wasn’t going anywhere.
His side was fine so he got out, pulled my door open and pulled me out of the car by my broken arm.
The pain hit me and I must have passed out but I saw him get something out of the boot then run off. I woke up on a bench with a lady looking after me.
Since then I’ve had a four-and-a-half-hour operation to insert metal plates and 28 staples to seal the wound. I’ve been diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder too and still can’t use my arm properly. I had to give up my job as a hairdresser as my boss couldn’t keep the position for me whilst I recovered.
It’s definitely the worst date I’ve ever been on and has put me off men, I won’t be dating again any time soon.
It was heartbreaking when my kids came to see me in hospital and they were too scared to come near me because of the state of my face.
I messaged Van Outen from hospital and he just replied saying “I’m sorry”. I couldn’t believe he had done that to me.
He’s in prison now but that hasn’t really given me much closure. It’s been really hard.
No shit. Sounds completely and utterly terrible right there and then doesn’t it? Bear that in mind next time you complain about some guy making you pay for dinner on your next lousy first date.
