A transgender and pansexual couple are being called Britain’s first gender-fluid family.

They are raising their four-year-old kid – named Star Cloud – as a “person” rather than a specific gender.

Although they are not naming genders in the family, they have assigned roles, with Louise (above left), who identifies as transgender, as the “mother” in the family and Nikki (above right), who identifies as pansexual, as the “father”. Although Nikki is actually Star’s birth mother, she is now considered the father after Star starting calling her “Dada”. Meanwhile, Star calls Louise his mummy, although she is technically the biological father. And although Star was born as a boy, his parents have told him “not to get hung up” on his gender.

Louise is currently transitioning to become a woman with hormone treatment, after feeling like she was a girl from the age of eight. She has been living as a woman even since Star’s birth. Nikki on the other hand was born a woman, but is pansexual and will dress as a woman on some days and as a man on others. The parents allow Star to feel free to wear make up, paint his nails and wear boys or girls clothes. In September Star will go to school wearing a boy’s uniform, but with a pink vest and socks. Nikki said:

We don’t want our child constrained by that either. We’re just an ordinary family being who we want to be.

We never tell Star he’s a boy, we tell him he can be whatever he wants. We don’t buy gender specific toys or clothes and we let him choose what he wears. Pink is one of his favourite colours.

We sat him down and explained that anyone can play with dolls and that it’s good practice for when he grows up and is a daddy. He said, ‘I might not be a daddy – I might be a mammy!’

He loves wearing leggings and, because of his name, he loves clothes with star patterns on.

He loves Barbie dolls, dressing up and fairies – but he also likes toys considered as boys’, such as cars.

We use the words ‘he’ and ‘him’ but don’t make any kind of big deal out of him being one sex or the other.

Well, it sounds like this family have got their system sorted. More and more people consider themselves gender fluid now that society is accepting of it, and it’s inevitable that more families like this will start to raise their kids as pansexual too. It’s the way we are progressing and I think it’s great that people are now free to choose the gender that they feel comfortable with.
