A woman named Daniela Liverani was visiting Vietnam when she started getting loads of nose bleeds. She thought this was an after effect of a car crash that she was involved in but it turns out it was due to something way worse than that – a three inch leech had crawled up into her nose and made its home there. Yuck. Even grosser when you think about this video of a giant leech swallowing a worm.
It took her until she was back in the UK to realise, even though she noticed a dark red object protruding from her nose on occasion – she thought this was just congealed blood. However, she later realised just what was going on and it sounds disgusting:
I tried to blow him out and grab him but I couldn’t get a grip of him before he retreated back up my nose. When I was in the shower, he would come right out as far as my bottom lip and I could see him sticking out the bottom of my nose.
So when that happened, I jumped out of the shower to look really closely in the mirror and I saw ridges on him. That’s when I realized he was an animal.
Gross. As you would imagine she went to hospital pretty much immediately when she realised this where the doctors tried to remove it using tweezers which sounds particularly horrific especially when it wouldn’t come out for half an hour. Here’s what Daniela had to say about that:
It was agony – whenever the doctor grabbed him, I could feel the leech tugging at the inside of my nose. Then all of a sudden, after half an hour, the pain stopped and the doctor had the leech in the tweezers. At one point, I could feel him up at my eyebrow. I asked the doctor what would’ve happened if I hadn’t gone to hospital and she said he’d probably have worked his way into my brain.
Grim. There’s still no explanation on how the leech got in her nose and why she couldn’t feel it either which is probably the scariest thing about it. Just imagine if you had something living inside your nose right now when you’re reading this? Rank. Still if your nose ever gets fucked up, you can grow another one on your forehead now so it’s not the end of the world.
