There’s already been one story about golliwogs today – a cafe owner in Norwich has (quite rightly) been asked to justify why he’s been selling them for years – and now it’s been revealed that the pub at the centre of the row for displaying them last week has had its windows damaged and graffiti scrawled all over it.

The White Hart in Grays, Essex defied a police order over Easter Weekend and continued to display the golli dolls after 15 of them were confiscated by the five-o ahead of an investigation. The reaction on social media was mixed with most people condemning their actions – the woke generation going in particularly hard – but the regular faceless number flag guys backing their defiance hard.

Sadly though, it’s now emerged that the pub was vandalised over the weekend with five windows being smashed and the place getting graffitied at around 12:40 a.m. on Sunday morning. Here’s what Essex Police district commander Tony Atkin said about it:

Inquiries are taking place to establish what happened in the lead-up to this incident and to identify those responsible, and includes viewing CCTV footage.

One line of inquiry is that the criminal damage is linked to a previous incident that we are currently investigating, also linked to the White Hart Inn.

We continue to investigate that incident and would ask the public to allow us to do so, remaining calm.

I mean it seems fairly obvious that the golliwog issue is probably what caused this, but I suppose it’s important to get all the facts straight before coming to a conclusion you believe is 100% correct. Fair play to the cops for exploring every avenue.

Anyway, assuming that is that, it’s a pretty stupid state of affairs because this is probably only going to make the owners of the pub even more defiant in their display of the dolls. I don’t think you can ever solve a problem like this through violence and it’s only possible through education and a willingness to listen, so congratulations to whoever wanted to escalate it even further through their actions here.

To be fair, it’s debatable if it could ever have been solved in the current climate really though isn’t it as neither side of the argument seem willing to back down? Never a good idea to escalate through violence however. Someone will probably end up getting murdered over it.

For more of the same, check out when ‘Wednesday’ was accused of racism for casting black actors as bullies. Bit much that one.
