A U.S. Health and Human services study trying to determine why lesbians are fat has cost U.S. taxpayers over $3.5 million, it was revealed this week.

The study, called ‘Sexual Orientation and Obesity: A Test of a Gendered Biopsychosocial Model’, looked at the disparity in obesity rates between straight women and lesbian women and also straight men and gay men.

According to the study:

It is now well-established that women of minority sexual orientation are disproportionately affected by the obesity epidemic, with nearly three-quarters of adult lesbians overweight or obese, compared to half of heterosexual women. In stark contrast, among men, heterosexual males have nearly double the risk of obesity compared to gay males.

They justify the spending by arguing that “these disparities are of high public-health significance”, and say studies will continue until summer 2016.

Really makes you wonder what other random studies your tax money goes to doesn’t it? It’s not all about building new roads, schools, hospitals and all that malarkey; we’ve got to know why 90% of lesbians are fat too. Top scientists, dieticians and sociologists all working hard in the lab trying to figure it out — studies like this don’t happen for free you know.
