Vegans really seem to be turning it up this year with their protests against people enjoying eating meat for Christmas and we saw their most outrageous stunt yet yesterday as a bunch of them stormed a Waitrose in Brighton and surrounded the turkey to stop people purchasing it.

Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) stormed the supermarket yesterday afternoon and formed a human chain in front of the meat section, making it literally impossible for customers to pick up any of the food. A protester with a loud speaker then gave the following speech:

This Christmas time you might be worried about what presents to buy and how to organise family get togethers, but the animals are facing carnage.

Around ten million turkeys are slaughtered this time of year so they can end up on your Christmas table in the United Kingdom.

Catching and transporting birds can cause considerable pain and distress. Many birds may be injured whilst being removed from sheds and put into crates. Poor handling frequently results in bruising, skin grazing and broken blood vessels.

Loaded into trucks, piled next to their friends and not knowing where they are headed, no chance of escape. Transport to slaughter can be long with birds experiencing extremes of temperature, stress suffocation and shock.

Animals are not things. Lives are not commodities. It’s time to end these cruel and bloody traditions. Take the death off your plate this Christmas.

I mean I can see what they’re saying and maybe even get behind it, but as I’ve said before in these pages countless times that I don’t think that doing stuff like this is really going to help get the point across, it’s just going to make people who hate vegans already hate them even more. Keep doing stuff like this if you want though, sure. Don’t think it’s gonna help anything though.

The protesters were eventually dispersed when the cops turned up and told them that they were liable to be arrested if they continued the protest. They went outside and started chanting out there after that. Useful.

For more vegans, here’s a bunch of them having a candlelit vigil for some turkeys this Christmas as well. Come on now guys.
